Caffe Nero UK Caramel Shortcake review

Caramel shortcake or millionaire's shortbread as many people call it is loved by pretty much everyone and I am no exception. The fact that it is usually very rich makes it feel quite indulgent and naughty. Despite this I haven't tried Caffe Nero's version before purely because it looks so much thinner than versions from other cafes but I decided that it was finally time to see how it would compare.

I arrived at the CafĂ© quite early and so the staff were literally bringing this straight from storage to the counter. I am assuming that this was kept in some sort of fridge as it was really cold. I am the type of person who likes to keep my chocolate in the fridge so for me this was perfect! The layer of chocolate was much thicker than I was expecting and had a lovely crack when I bit through. Although not very sweet itself, the flavour was of a decent quality and I was glad that it wasn't any sweeter because this was compensated for by the caramel layer. This was smooth, delicious and teeth rotting-ly sweet as caramel should be. I actually ended up liking the fact that this tray bake wasn't as thick as other coffee chains as it meant the caramel and chocolate didn't take a backseat to the shortbread which was also really enjoyable. It had a good bite and sweetness and was much more of a biscuit texture than cake which I often find with the thicker versions of these snacks. I am surprised to say that this is one of the best caramel shortcakes that I have had in a while. It was rich and buttery without being too sickly and I am already looking forward to having this again.
